Mathilde
Serenity Between Belgian Dunes
Neglected school turned into delightful senior residence
Nestled in the peaceful outskirts of Koksijde, Belgium, the Mathilde Home is a great example of the transformative power of thoughtful design. Commissioned by the Belgian architecture studio PVL Architecten, this concept envisions the transformation of an abandoned holiday school building into a spacious housing complex for the elderly. The design preserves the site’s original charm while creating a modernized environment that fosters a sense of belonging and well-being for its senior residents. With a deep sensitivity to the local community and natural landscape, Mathilde is more than just an architectural facelift—it is a harmonious blend of functionality, sustainability, and connection to its surroundings.
An invitation to connect
The concept features a multi-level lush garden that weaves through the 16 semi-detached houses, with winding paths inviting exploration and relaxation. A spacious inner courtyard, surrounded by apartments, serves as a sanctuary where residents can gather, socialize, or enjoy moments of solitude amidst greenery. The addition of a rooftop community garden not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides a shared space for cultivating plants and fostering interaction among residents. The sandy dune surface of Koksijde, a defining feature of the local landscape, is preserved and seamlessly integrated in the design, ensuring the proposed complex harmonizes with its natural surroundings.
Our team has been entrusted with delivering ten architectural exterior renderings to our Belgian partner. These visualizations illustrate the full scope of the project, including bird’s-eye views for a comprehensive overview, multiple eye-level images that create an immersive walk-through experience, and detailed perspectives of the surrounding residential units.
